Castlemaine is located 130 kilometres to the north west of Melbourne. Castlemaine is a great country town built on the back of the gold rush and has a wealth of mountain biking opportunities both on purpose built trails and on fire trails in the surrounding forests. Castlemaine regularly holds mountain biking events and lies in the middle of the Goldfields Trail. V Line has a rail service between Castlemaine and Bendigo which allows riders to do a one way trip along the track and return via rail.
